Dear Friends!

Happy Spring! It’s been a long winter and thankfully spring is around the corner. Thank you for being patient with us as we survived the winter months together. Making the decision to close the doors at the Senior Center is never an easy decision. Please know that when we make the choice to close, it’s not to punish but rather to protect our staff and center members.

I am happy to announce that as of April 1, 2022, the mask mandate at the Senior Centers will be dropped. Please continue wearing your mask if you prefer but it is no longer mandatory. THANK YOU to those of you who followed this requirement and allowed us to get to this point. We are excited to be one step closer to a post-pandemic world.

We have a new face at the receptionist desk, Tina Russell. Tina transferred from our transportation department as a driver & office assistant where she has been for the last 8 years. We are excited to have Tina in this new role. Please stop by and welcome Tina to her new position.

I am also pleased to announce the arrival of two new satellite managers; Beth Johnson at Garaway Senior Center and Janet Tedrow at Newcomerstown Senior Center. We welcome these new managers to our team and look forward to watching them grow each of their centers.

If you have been to the grocery store lately, you will know that food prices have increased up to 7% from December 2020. We are anticipating another 2-3% increase for all food and food away from home is forecast to increase by another 3-4%. Additionally, we are experiencing food shortages and food limits by our vendors. We have set our menus for the next three months but please note, last minute changes may occur depending upon availability and pricing. We are doing the best we can with the circumstances we are faced with. Please have patience and grace as we navigate through this chapter.

Due to the increase costs in other items such as cleaning supplies and non-food items, we are planning a few fundraisers to help defray the costs of doing business. Our goal is to stretch our levy dollars as far as we can to ensure our seniors are getting the best value.  Our strategy is to avoid eliminating programs or increasing fees despite the increase in costs. I want to encourage each of you to participate in the fundraisers that we offer as we promise you will see value in participating.

Finally, I want to encourage our members and friends to take advantage of our program, Bridges to Wellness, where we have a Community Health Worker who is trained to assist with issues related to housing, employment, establishing a medical home with a primary care doctor, behavioral health issues such as depression or anxiety, transportation, or food insecurity. If you are 50 and older and are on a Medicaid plan such as CareSource, Molina, United Healthcare, or Buckeye, please contact Marley Miller at 330-364-6611 for additional help. We are here to serve our members.

Have a wonderful spring and enjoy the sunshine
